The
Late Middle:
With plans on the horizon
of migrating to full-time fine art and building a studio,
it was now or never if I wanted to return to the West
Coast. My long time buddy, Larry Hafemeister, had dreamed
of Alaska, so we planned a trip West and discovered
Quadra, a 25 mile long, 5 mile wide island one mile
(and a ferry ride) east of Campbell River, a town of
about 70,000 on the east coast of Vancouver Island,
British Columbia, Canada. It’s right in the path of the boats headed
up the “inland passage’ to Alaska, and
with it’s unusually temperate microclimate, and
a phenomenon known as a “cloud shadow,” is
protected from the rains experienced by Seattle and
Vancouver. The hurdle of obtaining Canadian Permanent
Residency status was a two-year ordeal, but served
as an impetus to migrate our 20-year friendship into
marriage on December 23, 2004. “About time” was
my Dad’s comment!
